Fed: Kernot s turbulent times in the ALP
Headline moments in Cheryl Kernot's relationship with the ALP after her defection from
the Australian Democrats in 1997:
* October 1997 - Kernot Quits Democrats to join the ALP.
* Jan 1998 - Hits out at media and stuns the ALP national conference by publicly contemplating
quitting politics after a removals truck crashes into her Brisbane home.
* Oct 1998 - Narrowly wins the Queensland seat of Dickson, but criticises the ALP for
not giving her a safer seat.
* Oct 1999 - Kernot switches portfolios to employment after publicly speaking about
the difficulties of juggling a marginal seat with the regional affairs portfolio.
* Oct 1999 - Kernot contradicts Kim Beazley and says she never asked for the change of portfolio.
* Nov 1999 - Kernot hospitalised for glandular fever, and goes on three months sick leave.
* Jan 2000 - Kernot wears a red wig as a disguise from the media.
* April 2001 - Kernot praises new Democrats leadership team and criticises Labor for
not giving younger MPs a better public role.
